Many parents in the UK are currently at the final stages of deciding on which primary school to send their child. I often get asked by parents for advice on how to choose a school for their child. In order to help my followers who may be going through this experience I’d like to share my views below.
Dear parents and guardians, before we get into academic reports, other people’s experience of different schools etc which is super helpful, I want to say something about the importance of seeing the primary school and meeting the staff for yourself, and also letting your little one see the school too.
Your own gut instinct and how comfortable you and your child feel in the environment, and if you feel you can develop a trusting relationship with the staff is crucial to a positive educational experience. Especially in these early years where your child is stepping out of the home, learning to form relationships with adults outside of the family, and experiencing education in a more formal way for the first time. These first experiences last forever and form the basis for how we feel about school and education in the future.
My advice as a teacher and tutor is by all means to listen to the advice of other parents, read the school reports and check the results BUT give veto power to your gut feelings after visiting the school for yourself. And ask your child how they found each school too. This will make the child feel empowered and part of the process that ultimately affects them too. They will then be less likely to have problems saying goodbye at morning drop off times.
Good luck
